Gonçalo Amaral's private life has nothing whatsoever to do with the McCanns or the death of Madeleine. It has been common knowledge for sometime now the McCanns have hired a group of spies in Portugal to report back to them on every breath Amaral takes. Here is the proof, I believe there is also a tape in circulation. Kates book dripping with hatred for Amaral . I place a link once more to the summing up of the investigation and still fail to grasp how this blog and others under the guidance of the McCanns refuse to accept that the McCanns arguido status was a joint venture between two countries who both decided the McCanns were involved with the disappearance of their daughter.

This blog doesn’t lower itself with discussion of personal conduct, particularly in people’s private lives. In discussing that subject in this article, I hope this blog won’t lower itself. But justification for doing so is needed.
As first coordinator of the Madeleine investigation,, Dr Amaral advanced a [i]thesis[/i] (Gerry’s word!) that the couple covered up the death of their beloved daughter Madeleine inside apartment 5a and simulated an abduction.
He took early retirement from the PJ to continue advancing that calumny against the couple in a book, in a video and in countless interviews across Europe.
But revenge won’t do as a motive.
Besides, the McCanns are seeking atonement themselves through the appropriate channels and the forthcoming libel hearing is due soon.
We must do better.
Surely the justification is that the thesis damages the search for Madeleine, because it encourages people to believe that Madeleine is dead.
And if the person who advanced it can be found wanting in his private life, that might tell us something important about the thesis, and about what credibility we can, or should, give it.
The job of policemen is to uphold the law and bring law breakers to book.
As such, we might expect them, not necessarily to be paragons of virtue in their private lives, but certainly to be law abiding and respectable.
No doubt police men and women have affairs and in most countries (including Portugal) affairs are quite legal.
But enshrined into the Portuguese constitution and law is protection of individual rights, including from threats or harassment.
Whatever the rights or wrongs of affairs of the heart, there can surely never be justification for overstepping boundaries to violate these rights. There is proof that Dr Amaral did exactly that.
Doctor Amaral had an affair with. Ana Sofia Bras and her husband, Jose Araujo retaliated in kind by having an affair with Amaral’s wife, Sofia.
But then the other couple both decided they’d made mistakes, that what they were doing was stupid, that they wanted to rebuild their former married lives.
And the affairs ended.
Amaral, presumably feeling rejected and scorned, took a terrible retribution. While Portuguese law does not allow entrapment, it does allow preventive measures by those whose rights are, or might be, infringed, to protect themselves and provide evidence should there be any infringement of rights.
Dr Amaral embarked on a vindictive vendetta against the couple, including harassing, threatening and menacing telephone calls.
The couple installed a recorder to capture Amaral’s diatribes. There was no entrapment here, The couple did not invite Amaral to phone them, but they had the equipment to record his vituperative outpourings in the event that he did. At least one call was captured on tape.
In this phone call, as his justification for his affair with the other man’s wife, Dr Amaral used all the base terms of promiscuity, moral vices and misogyny to describe Ms Bras, and threatened Mr Arauja with a ‘golden bullet’. He also accused Mr Arauja of ‘cowardice’.
An uncomfortable pattern repeats itself, here, reflected, also, in Dr Amaral’s former public and professional life.
Dr Amaral was removed from the Madeleine investigation because of manifest inadequacies in the way he had conducted and managed it.
And he reacted by embarking on a vendetta against the couple which, while not infiringing any criminal laws, certainly might have infringed civil, as will be tested in the forthcoming libel action.
Mr Amaral comes across as a man unused to not getting his own way, whose reactions are volatile, unpredictable and even criminal when he doesn’t.
Can we really trust his thesis about what happened to Madeleine?

This blog contains libel content in as much as it suggests a relationship in Amarals life caused him to find the McCann's suspects in the death of their daughter.If this is the line they intend to take for their libel case they and their lawyer will be a laughing stock, they will be thrown out and charged a heavy fee for wasting the courts time.

Este blog não se rebaixa à discussão da conduta pessoal, particularmente sobre a vida privada das pessoas. Ao discutir este assunto, neste artigo, espero não baixar o nível do blog, por isso quero justificar o motivo para o fazer. Como coordenador principal da investigação da Madeleine, o Dr. Amaral avançou com a tese (palavra do Gerry!) que o casal tinha escondido a morte da sua amada filha Madeleine no apartamento 5a e simulado um rapto. Ele reformou-se da PJ para poder publicar um livro caluniando o casal, assim como um vídeo e as inúmeras entrevistas que deu por toda a Europa.
Mas a vingança não conta como motivo e, além disso, os McCann procuram justiça pelos canais apropriados, e a próxima audiência do julgamento por difamação estará para breve.
Temos de fazer melhor. Sem dúvida, a justificação é que a tese prejudica a procura pela Madeleine porque encoraja as pessoas a pensarem que ela está morta. E se a pessoa que defende esta tese tem falhas na sua vida privada, estas poderão dar-nos informações importantes sobre a tese, e sobre a sua credibilidade.
O trabalho do polícia é fazer cumprir a lei e obrigar os infractores a cumpri-la. Assim sendo, espera-se que, mesmo que não sejam o exemplo da virtude nas suas vidas privadas, sejam cumpridores da lei. Sem dúvida, que homens e mulheres polícia têm casos extra-conjugais e isto, na maior parte dos países (Portugal incluído), é legal. Mas está consagrada da lei e na Constituição portuguesa a protecção dos direitos individuais, incluindo de ameaças e assédio.
Independentemente dos motivos, certos ou errados, do coração, não existem qualquer justificação para pisar limites e violar esses direitos. E há provas de que o Dr. Amaral fez exactamente isso.
O Dr. Amaral teve um caso com Ana Sofia Bras e o seu marido, José Araújo, retaliou tendo um caso com Sofia, esposa de Amaral. Mas depois, o outro casal percebeu que era um erro, que o que estavam a fazer era estúpido, e que queriam reconstruir a sua vida juntos. E os casos terminaram. Amaral, provavelmente sentindo-se rejeitado e desprezado, vingou-se da pior forma. A lei portuguesa não permite armadilhas, mas permite que aqueles cujos direitos foram, ou possam vir a ser, infringidos, possam tomar medidas de protecção, apresentando provas de que poderá qualquer violação dos seus direitos.
O Dr. Amaral avançou na sua vingança contra o casal, que incluiu assédio e ameaças. O casal instalou um gravador para capturar as ameaças de Amaral. Não foi nenhuma armadilha, o casal não sugeriu que Amaral lhes ligasse, mas tinham o telefone preparado para o caso de este o fazer. Pelo menos uma chamada foi gravada.
Nesse telefonema, para justificar o caso que tinha tido com a esposa do outro homem, o Dr. Amaral usou todos os termos promíscuos, de vícios morais e de misoginia para descrever a Sr. Brás e ameaçou o Sr. Araújo com uma “bala de ouro”. Acusou-o também de ser cobarde.
Há aqui um desconfortável padrão que se reflecte aqui e que se repete na vida pessoal e profissional do Dr. Amaral. O Dr. Amaral foi afastado do caso Madeleine devido à sua manifesta inadequação a conduzi-lo e geri-lo. E ele reagiu dando início a uma vingança contra o casal e, embora não tenha infringido quaisquer leis criminais, certamente infringiu leis civis, como ficará provado no julgamento por difamação, brevemente. O Sr. Amaral surge como um homem pouco habituado a não ter as coisas à sua maneira e que tem reacções voláteis, imprevisíveis e até criminosas quando é contrariado.
Podemos mesmo confiar na sua tese acerca do que aconteceu a Madeleine?
